![]() It was popular all across the country in its day, and it’s “day” was almost 100 years. Mint Julep’s specific attachment to the South is less clear. It wasn’t until the last few decades of the century, those of whiskey’s ascendant quality and Cognac’s struggling production, that whiskey slid into the starring role, where it quite rightly remains. Juleps - the cocktail kind, with mint - quickly took root in Virginia, and soon were nationally embraced, the “first true American drink.” Like so many cocktails in the 1800s, early ones would’ve been with Cognac, or the less expensive rum. The burgeoning ice trade, started in New England in 1806, was by the 1810s shipping ice down south year round, and that’s all the drink needed to really take off. It travels from medicine cabinet to liquor cabinet by way of an English novel called Tom Jones in 1749, wherein a character describes a bottle of wine, jokingly, as a “medicinal julap.” It is similar, Wondrich points out drolly, as referring to a bong hit as “glaucoma medicine.” ![]() “A ‘julep,’ you see, was medicine, pure and simple, and always had been.” From the Persian “gulab” - literally “rose water” - the word exclusively referred to sweetened medicinal liquid for some 300 years. “Somebody somewhere was kidding,” writes David Wondrich, in his magesterial Imbibe!. ![]() But add in Mint Juleps? Suddenly it’s a multi-day event, and the thought of dressing up like a carnival barker from the 1930s seems necessary. The Kentucky Derby without the Juleps would be shorter than a commercial break, and just as skippable (I can’t be alone here). The same jaded bartender who rolls his eyes at your request for a copper Moscow Mule mug will not only accept but insist on a traditional pewter cup for your Mint Julep. It is simultaneously exuberant and genteel, a sign of a great party and yet deeply serious, and has found favor in everyone from Teddy Roosevelt to Margaret Mitchell. It is essentially a large cup of whiskey, and yet has been embraced by every strata of society as perfectly acceptable to have several on a Saturday afternoon. It evokes a sense of 200 years of Southern history that is almost impossibly sanitized, and no one seems to mind. Take a moment to consider its achievements: As a cocktail, it violates almost almost every drinking norm we have, so easily spanning apparent contradictions so as to make the impossible possible. That much is clear to just about everybody. The Mint Julep doesn’t give a damn about the rules. Note: an earlier and much more concise version of this article appears at Robb Report. Hopefully this will be sufficient until I can figure out how to have time/energy to write both there and here.Ĭocktail Videos: I’ve only shot about a dozen of these so far, but they’re all available on YouTube.Ĭocktail Articles (updated 7.16.23): Airmail Below is a linked & alphabetized list of every cocktail I’ve written about on Robb Report to date. ![]() ![]() I know I found myself seriously conflicted in how I felt about it for months before I saw it. The first trailer did nothing to persuade me that this was a film I must-see. ![]() Other than my infinite love for Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge masterpiece, I had not one ounce of desire to partake in a viewing. And then came the second theatrical trailer and it totally erased all the negativity I had surrounding the picture. Despite not being the biggest fan of Carey Mulligan, I found myself longing to see this spectacular unfold on screen. Talk about indecisiveness, eh? All I know is that after seeing this many times now I continuously melt over the heart wrenching love story, but I do know this…if you are not a fan of Moulin Rouge, this is not a movie for you.Īnd then boom! A third trailer was released and I felt a little uneasy again until I saw a preview for the film on the Cloud Atlas Blu-ray I was reviewing at the time here. Be warned and move on below with caution. So I guess it goes without saying that you all already know that The Great Gatsby is an adaptation of the classic novel of the same name written by F. Although I can’t remember back that far, I’m sure most of us have fond childhood memories of reading this one back in school. So while the nucleus of the story may not have changed all that much, the look and feel of the source material sure has thanks to the unique pioneership of Mr. Baz Luhrmann (we will touch upon this in the Extras section below). And while I may not like everything the man has made throughout his illustrious career (I’m looking at you Romeo & Juliet), there’s certainly no argument to make that this guy’s a visionary and is able to bring extraordinary things, high concepts and raw emotions to the big screen. The beautiful period romance was both co-written by Luhrmann and directed by him.īy golly The Great Gatsby ain’t no exception to his craft either. He’s got mad skillz.įitzgerald’s novel gets energized and breathes new life into your screen with performances by crowd pleasers such Leonardo DiCaprio (you know he’s going to always bring his A-game), Tobey Maguire (he’s Spider-Man no more) and Carey Mulligan. Much to my surprise, Joel Edgerton also stars in this one. ![]() ![]() Ever see The Warrior? If not, make sure to do so! This guy, much like the other aforementioned leading men, demands your attention. The Great Gatsby rounds off with performances by Elizabeth Debicki, Jason Clarke and the beautiful Isla Fisher. Much to my chagrin with the the majority of reviews from the critics out there, I have nothing but praise and good things to say about this Luhrmann production. Maybe I’m the only one who has a heart? Maybe I’m the only one who understands love? Maybe I care too much? I don’t know, but I do know this much. From the unbridled energy and the exhumed emotion to the stunning visuals and images, Baz brings the literary masterpiece to life on your 4K Ultra HD TV screen like only he can deliver the goods. I don’t feel like I’d really be spoiling a lot in regards to discussing the plot since the majority of us were probably forced to read this one at one point in time anyway, but for the sake of my review audience I’ll stick to my moral reviewing code of not spilling any beans as I tread on lightly here. So in a nutshell, I guess you can say The Great Gatsby follows the life and times of the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) and his poor neighbor, Nick (Maguire), who recounts his engagements, dealings and associations with Gatsby in the 1920’s. Essentially, Maguire’s character is the narrator here as he is encouraged to write everything down…hey…much like McGregor’s character in… Moulin Rouge!!!Īs Maguire’s character, Nick Carraway, settles into his new humble abode on the outskirts of New York City, conveniently located right next to Gatsby’s monstrous place, he rekindles a friendship with his cousin, Daisy (Mulligan) and her husband, Tom Buchanan (Edgerton). ![]() ![]() ![]() Unfurling the fuzzy power chords with an unyielding ferocity along with some gritty vocals The Raconteurs turned back the clock while turning up the heat. "Steady As She Goes" had White's guitar's lo-fi cries dance with his every spastic move. The Raconteurs, featuring Jack White (The White Stripes) and fellow Detroit rockers Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler brought the gasoline back into garage rock. Their version of the Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight, Tonight" would have made Billy Corgan smile. Songs such as "I Write Sins Not Tragedies," Time to Dance" and "But It's Better If You Do" showcased their unique blend of melody-driven rock and dance theatre. But the bottom line (and there's always a bottom line) is there were an estimated 40,000 - 60,000 daily attendance which will certainly ensure a long run here in Chicago.įriday found some heavy hitters with Panic! At the Disco who let the theatre shine with a bevy of costumed exrtras floating around the stage to help pepper the music with a little glitter. If you didn't have blisters on your feet you probably stayed on one side for the whole event. This was a mistake as it took an eternity to reach the stages at Butler Field if you were travelling from the stages at Hutchinson Field - or vice versa. This year - promoters' eyes grew even larger by having the fest run for three days instead of two and more than doubling the size of the grounds. The fest was tight and lean with many exciting acts featured alongside older established icons. Last year's promoters were able to secure Hutchinson Field (Grant Park) for the two day fest with much success with such acts as Weezer, The Arcade Fire, The Killers and Pixies. Then in 2004 the fest was cancelled due to low ticket sales before it ever played a single city with such headlining acts as Morrissey, PJ Harvey, Modest Mouse and Sonic Youth. Re emerging in 2003 - Lollapalooza found success back as a touring circus - albeit much more conservative than the early years. After waning ticket sales the fest shuttered it's box office and called it a day. The first few years were very successful marrying such acts as Jane's Addiction, Pearl Jam, Ministry, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden and many more vital bands of the genre. Beginning in 1991 and springing from the fertile mind of Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell - Lollapalooza was a travelling rock 'n roll circus for the alternative community.
